More about Heliophile…
“Heliophile is Gijs van Ouwerkerk, the former being slightly easier to pronounce than the latter to anyone outside my home country of The Netherlands. As an 8-year-old kid, I was watching a charts show on TV and ”Radio Ga Ga” by Queen came on. The sounds and atmosphere of that song sparked my imagination like never before!
Ever since, I’ve had a soft spot for timeless popular music with strong melodies, whether it’s The Beatles, hard rock and even extreme metal, or the 80s synthpop anthems we still love today.
After a long period of playing guitar, bass and drums, singing and being the principal songwriter in several extreme heavy metal bands, the synthesizer sounds I heard at a gothic/industrial party reminded me of “Radio Ga Ga” again. So I looked for somebody in my area to play synths on my songs. I didn’t find anybody.
Therefore, I took the time to learn how to produce, arrange and mix electronic music myself, while also boosting my vocal skills. This story gave birth to the “Nebula” EP; four melodic, melancholic, electronic pop songs with profound lyrics.
It was recorded and mixed in Heliophile’s own studio in The Netherlands and mastered by Ken Porter (De/Vision, Intuition) in the United States.”
